Sit inside the circle at a neighbourhood rehearsal in Kotagede, take a saron part, and learn to count in a cycle instead of bars.
Yogyakarta's gamelan groups practise in open pavilions after dark, for themselves. You are hosted as a visiting guest: shoes off, seated low, given a saron and a single repeating part. The leader explains the colotomic cycle — how the gong marks the end of a circle rather than the start of a bar — and then you play through with the group.
