Sumba's small, tough horses are family property and status. A keeper takes you out across the grass hills at the end of the day.

The sandalwood pony is woven through Sumbanese life: bride-wealth, ritual, transport. You meet the keeper at the paddock, learn how the horses are fed and read, then ride or walk beside them across the savannah to a ridge above the coast.
