A Karangasem guide takes you into the royal water garden as the gates open, before the queue forms at the stepping stones.
Tirta Gangga was built by Karangasem's last raja as a water palace, and it is still a working spring for the villages below. Arriving at opening hour, you walk the pools with a local guide who explains the royal history, the spring's role in irrigation, and which parts remain in ceremonial use rather than posing for the stepping-stone photograph.
