Giriloyo

The story

Giriloyo's makers work in cooperatives of a dozen women, drawing wax by hand for weeks per cloth. After the 2006 earthquake the village rebuilt around teaching, which is why classes here are run by makers rather than resellers.

Culture

Javanese village etiquette and court-derived batik motifs, some reserved for particular occasions.

Local people

Batik makers, rice farmers and students; most households combine the two first.

Food

Gudeg simmered overnight, tempe from the neighbouring hamlet, sweet Javanese spicing.

Crafts

Batik tulis in natural and synthetic dyes; canting drawing taught on beginners' cloth.

Nature

Rice plains at the foot of the Imogiri hills, with royal graveyard forest above.
