Tenganan Pegringsingan

The story

Tenganan's layout, calendar and marriage rules are set by awig-awig, a customary code recited and applied by the village assembly. Visitors are welcome on the main avenue; much of village life is deliberately not on display.

Culture

Bali Aga tradition, distinct from mainstream Balinese Hinduism in ritual, calendar and social structure.

Local people

Around 300 residents in walled compounds; weaving, lontar carving and farming households.

Food

Simple, ceremony-driven cooking; palm wine and rice dishes tied to the ritual calendar.

Crafts

Gringsing double ikat, lontar palm-leaf carving, ata basketry.

Nature

Dry east Bali hills, bamboo groves and communal orchards owned by the village, not individuals.
